The site
is located besides the Koundinya river a tributary of the Palar river
as its source at Kurudumalai hill. It has been known as Ganeshagiri,
Katakana and Yadavachala in the Kruta Yuga, Treta Yuga and Dwapar
Yuga respectively. In the Kaliyuga i.e. the present age, its name
said to be Koundinya Kshetra as it was the site of Hermitage of Sage
Koundinya. This is the history of site as per the census of India
1981. Therefore the farmers of the site preferred to name this as
Koundinya organic farming initiative, (KOFI) for the site. The site
is located 12 kilometers away from Mulbagal taluk head quarter. The
Bewalli consists of 84 families with a population of 580. The average
literacy rate of male is 75% and female literacy rate is 50%. |
Bewalli village comes under
eastern dry zone of Karnataka and included under agricultural zone number
5 with an annual rainfall of 822 mm. The Bewalli site comprises 193 hactares
of cultivable land out of which 100 ha land has been selected for the
proposed organic farming initiative. Here the soil texture is medium black
clay and red clay soil. PH value of the soil between 7.5 to 8.1. E.C.
is 0.09 to 0.5. Organic carbon is 0.32 to 0.5 that is low. Available "p"
is 10.2 to 20.8 kgs per hectare that is medium. Potassium content of the
soil is medium that 80-170kgs/hectare.
